7/365: He was a Brave One

untitled.jpg

These little guys sure are flighty. And apparently, cameras are more scary than a 3 year old screaming "There's another hummingbird!!!" I've been trying to capture one for a week or so now. My macro is slow to focus though and I've had more near misses than successes. On about my fifth attempt of the day I told Isaac "I'm waiting for a brave one." After I snapped the picture above Isaac exclaimed "He was a brave one!"

Such a sweet comment from your son! What macro lens do you have? Is slow focus pretty common for macro lenses?

Do you have the 105mm? Mine is slow as molasses. Crazy sharp though if you hit focus with it though! Isaac just cracked me up! Too funny. Love this shot. And thanks for your comments yesterday. Comp is going to be my focus this year :)

It is the Nikon 105 2.8. I think that slow focus is definitely an issue with Macros... I think I read slowness also increases as focal length of the lens increases (so a 60mm might be quicker than my 105) because the lens has more "space" to hunt through to find focus. There is a way to lock the lens to only focus from 0.5m up to infinity, which cuts off hunting for anything under half a meter. I wish I could tell it to only hunt under half a meter as well. I generally focus manually, but that little bird was so quick... and I don't focus manually fast at all.... oh well, it worked out ok :)
